Field Notes

Description:

Sometimes the wildlife comes to you! I went up to enjoy the sun on my roof for a few minutes yesterday and when I came back inside, this guy was on my kitchen counter. (And one of my cats was on the dining table watching intently.) These beetles are gorgeous! But they are pests. And I don't have palms in my garden, so I have no idea where it came from. My young student dubbed him the Elephant Beetle because of his long nose and "tusks". She then took him outside and released him into my patch of mint.
