Description:
Small gregarious seed-eating finch, with brown mantle and powdery blue face, chest, rump and flanks - female has less blue below. Another characteristic helping the ID is pale grey bill.
Habitat:
Its range is southern part of Africa, south of Equator and this would be the only blue waxbill throughout its range (very little overlapping with Red-cheeked waxbill on the northern side of this range). Usually seen in dry woodland and savannah; and often close to humans, in gardens and such. Here, observed regularly in urban setting of Kinshasa, in many gardens.
