Field Notes

Description:

Grey mammal, somewhat smaller than a raccoon with a pointed snout, pink nose, and a naked tail and ears.

Notes:

Possums are much maligned no doubt due in part to their rat-like appearance. However, they are notable creatures for many reasons including the fact that they are N. America's only marsupial, they have 4 thumbs, they generally cannot contract rabies due to low blood temperature, and they help control tick populations.

Check out this article for more info about they may help control the spread of Lyme disease: http://www.caryinstitute.org/newsroom/opossums-killers-ticks

These particular babies are orphans and on their way to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
