Cortinarius

Two things to check that it is indeed a Cort is to do a spore print and look for a veil. All Corts have brown spores (get a good deposit) and some remnants of a cortina- a cob-web like partial veil that covers developing gills. Sometimes the veil remnants are left on the rim of the cap, or on the stem where it forms a ring or still stretching from the cap to the stem if the specimen is a juvenile. If on the stem, it may appear brown from capturing by falling spores
