Field Notes

Description:

exotically beautiful small North American duck with strong feet and claws that allows them to perch on branches. They nest in tree cavities or nest boxes like the Hooded merganser and often compete for breeding space.

Habitat:

City park

Notes:

This guy has been hanging around the park for some weeks - he just finished molting into his breeding plumage - see last two photos for the "eclipse" plumage(taken 2 weeks prior). He is very shy and a tough photography subject. I lucked out that a woman was feeding grain, because of a newly dumped muscovy in the park
