Field Notes

Description:

Big, ugly, brown insect about 2 cm in length. IIt was alive, moved when I moved the leaf to take a picture. Very creepy-looking.

Habitat:

My butternut squash garden

Notes:

I think it might be a cicada, but am not sure. Not from the Midwest, not familiar with the invertebrates here

Is a cicada nymph probably coming out of the ground for molting into an adult! Cicada nymphs spend many months and up to 17 years underground (depending on the particular species), living on root fluids, a low energy source, before they get to the winged-short-lived adult. Great moment to witness metamorphosis!
