Indian Paintbrush

genus: Castilleja

Greater Red Indian Paintbrush

Castilleja crista-galli

Comments (3)

Castilleja is a notoriously difficult genus for differentiating down to the species. Color alone is totally unreliable. Much more possible with a dichotamous key.
There are lots of species in this genus, so am not sure which one this is. See http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=CASTI2 for more information. There are several species of Castilleja in the area in which the photo was taken. The crista-galli is listed north of this location in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, but it could be here as well, just not reported. Cool photo. One of my favorite flowers!
