Description:
The frothy substance in this picture is plant sap which has been sucked out by the Spittlebug and then produced into a froth to cover the nymph stage of the bug. The froth has an acidic taste to deter predators and also insulates the nymph from the heat and cold and stops the nymph from drying out. The froth is also know as cuckoo spit, frog spit or snake spit.
