Thanks AshishNimkar.. It is a very shy bird! It lives in the "Flying High Bird Sanctuary" which is the largest free flight aviary in Australia. The owner of the park had not seen it till I send the photo to him!
Sounds like a logical answer to me! Congrats on getting an answer. :)
David from http://flyinghighbirdsanctuary.net.au/ gave me the answer! He first said it was a Bobwhite.. but the head was not right.. In the Park they have only Californian and Bobwhite... So it can only be a cross between the two! :)
Great! That was an effort, but well worth it. :) How did you work out the ID eventually?
The bird has a ID.. Finally!!! It is a cross between a California and a Bobwhite Quail...
Agreed it's the same family, it has to be. Good luck getting it ID'd, will be interesting to see what it is. :)
@Dangermouse.. I have seen the California Quail too and Gambel's Quail.. They look look family.. and @ Liam.. I will send a email to the bird park..
My bird book is for European birds, but there's a section at the back on escapes and introduced, and this quail looks a lot like a California Quail, except it has a white face instead of a black one. But it's identical, even down to the head piece. :)
This quail really has me stumped. Please try requesting an ID on Birdforum.net. I am really interesting in the outcome.
similar to this spot: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5688107
Looks almost exactly like a North American gamble's quail but with a white face...Interesting...
Is it possibly a hybrid? It has the look of a bobwhite and the plummage is like a scaled quail. But then it has the topknot of a moutain quail. Got a lot going for it at any rate: it is a beauty.
That's prob. why it looks familiar to me. Couldn't find it in my Collins birdguide though. :(
Thanks guys.. and @ lori.tas it was taken at a bird park! I don't believe it is native!
Doesn't look like anything native. Was this on a farm?
I know I've seen this one before, but what is it? Some sort of Grouse? Gorgeous photo!
What a beautiful bird. It looks all egyptian.
