Field Notes

Description:

These two blue-gray tanagers were spotted fighting other birds off for their share of fruit at the Arenal Observatory, Arenal National Park, Costa Rica. These adults have a light bluish head and underparts, darker blue upperparts, and a shoulder patch in a different hue of blue well visible on the front bird.

Habitat:

Open woodland, cultivated areas and gardens. Distribution: from Mexico south to northeast Bolivia and northern Brazil, all of the Amazon Basin, except the very south. Introduced to Lima (Peru). Called Blue Jean in Trinidad and Tobago.

Notes:

These are a noisy and restless lot. They live mainly on fruit, and hence love the pieces of melon laid out by the park rangers.

Thank you all for your comments. These guys are fruit lovers, and the melons put our by the rangers work wonders to attract them.
