Fun fact! Beavers have more impact upon the landscape than any other animal with the exception of humans! Their “landscaping” activities maintain the wetlands that sponge up floodwaters, the dams they build help to buffer the impact of droughts and floods, lessen erosion, and act as a filter to purify water. Several feet of silt can collect upstream of older beaver dams, and toxic substances such as pesticides are broken down by microbes in the wetlands that beavers create, resulting in cleaner water downstream of dams that needs less treatment for human use. In addition to benefiting us, the wetland habitats beavers create and maintain support many other, especially fish and waterfowl.
