Field Notes

Description:

about 25cm, red with purple spotted lateral line

Habitat:

rainforest

Notes:

I spotted this chameleon in Andohahela National Park. I searched my field guides long and hard for this chameleon with no luck. I thought ID'ing a red chameleon would be easy but it's not. Chameleons can be really tough to ID because of their color changing abilities.

Thanks for the comments. Auntnance, I think you're right. I've looked at this species before. The head does match and its range and habit. Even with all the photos I see of it, I still don't see any with this red color, but it is highly variable. I will go with this ID.
I don't know how variable the colors can be, but the head sure resembles the oustalet's chameleon.
Now that is a colourful fellar! That lateral line is just striking. Great spotting, Dan. :)
