Red Milkweed Beetle
Tetraopes tetrophthalmus
43.0904, -79.0861
Field Notes
Description:
The red and black coloring are aposematic, advertising the beetles' inedibility. There are many milkweed-eating species of insect that use the toxins contained in the plant as a chemical defense.
Habitat:
forest edge, near pond on milkweed
Notes:
I spotted this along the edge of the pond at Fireman's Park.
