I saw several burrows on Mt Diablo each neatly covered with a web.

@ courtney, I have confirmed with the Ranger on Mt Diablo that this is surely a funnel web spider. Tarantulas have burrows which are almost 2 inches in diameter and the web is on the INSIDE and not the outside!!

I will ask a Ranger on Mt Diablo. It is Tarantula season and they are expected to emerge soon. It could be that or a simple Funnel Web Weaver. i will keep you updated!

I'm not sure, Emma. Sorry I didn't see your post. I'll read up on it. Have you tried to keep checking were you spotted the burrows with webbing? Maybe you can spot the spider when it comes out for it's catch.

@ Courtney , I was researching the web and I did come across images of Tarantula burrows covered with a web. When the burrow is covered it very likely indicates that somebody is home. Below is a link of a Thai Tarantula's home. http://dokmaidogma.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/tarantula/ Wolf spiders have lids on their burrows. My pic could simply mean that a funnel web spider is using a burrow as a retreat or could it possibly mean a Tarantula's home?

No of course not! I'm very interested. I've seen spiders on T.V. that make burrows. Never actually seen one though.

Courtney,there are mouse spiders which make burrows as deep as 3 ft and also wolf spiders which are burrow makers. We have lots Of Tarantulas on Mt Diablo and this is Tarantula season. i am just very curious and that is the reason for all these questions! hope you do not mind it.

That could be a type of funnel-web spider. Sometimes it's hard to see the actual spider if they are down deep though.
