Field Notes

Description:

Florida's state butterfly is seen here nectaring on jatropha. This is a very long-lived butterfly due to its ability to digest pollen as well as nectar, giving it an average life span of 6 - 9 months. Its host plant is passionvine (Passiflora spp.).

Notes:

The chunk missing from the lower wing is probably the result of an anole (lizard) trying to make a meal of this butterfly.
