Description:
The Brolga is a large soft grey bird between 1 metre and1.5 metres tall. also known as the native companion it is a bird of legend and is represented strongly in Aboriginal stories. Long legs, long neck and graceful body with huge wingspan allow this bird to dance, wade, fly long distances in search of swamps and wetlands in northern and eastern Australia. Call is a loud trumpeting sound with gutteral short calls.
Habitat:
Once more widespread and common the Brolga's range has dimished since European settlement. Often seen around swamps and wetlands and open areas adjacent. Also seen in cane fields and crop areas, man-made dams. Also seen in south west Western Australia and overseas in New Guinea, the Coral Sea Islands and occasionally in New Zealand.
