Field Notes

Description:

about golf ball size, pulp around seeds, sweet

Habitat:

temperate forest

Notes:

I've seen these plants flowering in the spring but can't remember the name. I did not know they produced this kind of fruit. There was one fruit per plant. I opened the fruit and it smelled very sweet. I don't normally go around eating strange fruit in the forest but this smelled so sweet I had to taste it. Usually poisonous fruits are bitter. I sucked the pulp off the seeds and spit them out. It was very tasty.
Only mature fruit should be eaten.
