Notes:

While on a walk at one of the wooded parks in the San Juan Islands we spotted a number of wonderful things growing in the dark damp forest.

Looks like maybe you were up Mt. Constitution on Orcas island, a wonderful place to foray for mushrooms. This may be one of the Cortinarius sp. that grow there. (btw, "toadstool" exists as a technical term only in fairy tales...) A shot of the gills might help identification.
