Field Notes

Description:

Called a Saprophyte in my plant book.
It is a myco-heterotroph. It parasites fungi that are in mycorrhizal relationships with vascular plants.

Habitat:

Pacific temperate rain forest of hemlock, fir, Big-leaf maple, and Red alder. Understory of Salal, Vanilla leaf, and Oregon grape.

Notes:

Found near the Diez Vistas hiking trail.

Hi Behn, Thanks for your comments. I have now read the articles in wiki - and am very interested because these plants are favourites of mine.
For what its worth, Pinesap is neither a mushroom, nor a saprophyte (saprophytes don't technically exist). It is a myco-heterotroph in the Heath family (Ericaceae) that has parasites off of fungi, generally the Bolete mushrooms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myco-heterotroph http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detritivore#Saprophytes
