Description:
Yellow-green with 12 black spots, six on each wing. Long black antennae. While it is pictured here on a wild flower, these insects mainly feed on the leaves, stems, flowers, and fruit of cucurbits (vegetables such as cucumbers, melons, and squash). Their larvae, often known as "corn rootworms", also feed on the roots of these vegetables.
Habitat:
Though they are spread all over North America, they are most commonly found in the southern half. Eggs are laid in the soil around the plants they feed on.
Notes:
They are known to carry the bacteria that cause crop diseases such as bacterial wilt and vector squash mosaic virus.
