Field Notes

Description:

Incredible colors on this one! Found near a creek aprox 4cm wide

Notes:

I'm feeling so lucky right now!! learnaboutbutterflies.com says "Most of them [The genus Sarota] are extremely rare and elusive - so much so that only that even the most experienced observers rarely manage to see more than half a dozen species in a lifetime."

Definitely a Sarota sp., I would not dare to confirm Sarota chrysus, although it looks like a perfect match. There is also Sarota subtesselata: http://butterfliesofamerica.com/imagehtmls/Riodinidae/07-SRNP-2019-DHJ374455_i.htm I have difficulties to separate the 2 species.
Hi Gilma,I was doing an inspection of a construction site on Turrialba, a humid tropical region with a strong caribbean influence (>3,5 meters of annual rain) at about 1000 m above the sea level. This beautiful animal was just standing near a creek. It stood there while I took the pictures and even stayed there afterwards. I feel so very lucky!
Amazing! Pretty sure about the ID, hoping bayucca will confirm.
