Field Notes

Description:

A dark, black beetle found on the pavement near grass. Its shell is iridescent, and gives on a purplish hue in direct sunlight. Beetles like it give off a foul odor, though I did not check this one for the same mechanism.

Species ID Suggestions

European Ground beetle

Carabus nemoralis

Carrion beetle

Carabus taedatus

ok I know many people think of the Silphidae as carrion beetles, but my mom (a forest entomologist) called this one a carrion beetle and the spotted Silphidae that pairs up and seems to reanimate a mouse corpse she called a Corpse Beetle. No doubt Ground Beetle works well on this one.
