Field Notes

Description:

At this time of the year macrofungi are scarce. These appeared to be growing from kangaroo scats. Approxiamtely 50mm tall. Dark spore? Wiry stipes. Matte finish on top and dry. There might be 2 species here. The last three pics are of a specimen which was a metre away from the other two.

Habitat:

In new grasses. open dry sclerophyll eucy forest in a nature reserve.

Notes:

Dark spores.. no sign of a ring... striated stipe just below the cap.. older specimens have a totally dark stipe?

Thirteen species of Panaeolus contain the hallucinogen psilocybin. including Panaeolus cyanescens and Panaeolus cinctulus. The bluing hallucinogenic members of this genus are sometimes segregated into a separate genus, Copelandia. Several members of this genus are known to contain psilocin and psilocybin and it is suspected that a number of other members of this genus contain unidentified psychoactive compounds. All members of this genus contain serotonin.
