Field Notes

Description:

Yellow head and chest with black crown, eye mask and throat. Black streaks over yellow chest. White underside with black streaking on flanks. Olive back with dark streaks. Wings grey with two wingbars.
Females have less to no yellow on chest and and overall faded color.

Habitat:

Winters in mixed forests.

Thank you and yes it is. When you see one you are stunned for a moment. I was when I saw it, even though I've seen them before.
actually the bird spotted me. I was searching for another bird and something landed on a branch of the oak tree less then 15ft from me. When I turned and looked, I saw yellow and was totally surprised how close he was that I had trouble focusing my camera on him. He stayed for a long while before a female came in and they took off.
