Field Notes

Description:

Pair of baby green herons

Habitat:

Outskirts of Eugene

Notes:

These birds would nest in the Weeping Willow tree in our front yard each year. We would have several babies, watching them grow and run around the yard and cul-de-sac for weeks in the summer was great fun. It was like having a flock of road runners in the yard!

Hm,..., maybe their parents liked the area for some reason. A pond nearby? Free fish? And preferring maybe doesn't mean that they solely go to those areas. Maybe they need to adapt to changing landscapes?
Thanks, Nicole... I thought so too, but the literature says they aren't supposed to nest in areas like this. They are supposed to prefer marshy areas! We lived in that house for 12 years and they nested there the entire time, they were such a joy to watch grow and run around the neighborhood!!
Yes, looks like immature Green Herons :-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Butorides_striatus1.jpg
