Field Notes

Description:

The lion is the tallest (at the shoulder) of the felines, and also is the second-heaviest feline after the tiger.

Habitat:

Ngorongoro crater

Notes:

We had a very close encounter with a lioness in Ngorongoro. We had a flat & our guide & my husband spent about 20 minutes changing the wheel while I stood & kept watch for any potentially dangerous animals. Having fixed the flat we got back in & started to drive - & found a sleeping lioness behind a rock about 200 yards from where we were & a second one heading towards her! Given lions can run at speeds of up to 60 miles an hour I think we had a pretty lucky escape!
