Field Notes

Description:

The word "grizzly" in its name refers to "grizzled" or grey hairs in its fur, but when naturalist George Ord formally named the bear in 1815, he misunderstood the word as "grisly", to produce its biological Latin specific name "horribilis".

Most female grizzlies weigh 330–770 lb while males weigh on average 510–990 lb. Newborn bears may weigh less than 1 lb.

Hi Karen. Would you be willing to add this to my mission - Naturally Houston. I'm trying to get photos of wildlife in and around the Houston, BC Canada area. Thanks. Cindy Verbeek
I guess he's just taking a nap! He's a long time resident of Grouse mountain so we had been on the lookout for him. We were a few 100 yards away so it was difficult to see any real detail.
What's going on in this picture? He looks rather groggy.
