Thanks, Dangermouse. I don't believe this plant has ANY friends (unfortunately it's not suicidal just out of spite). @Alice: I hope you advised this person of the evils in that bag. But I suppose they aren't useless: those corms take on some pretty bizarre shapes and in the hands of an imaginative preschooler can become new alien creatures,
I detest this plant! When I'm working and I know it's around, I treat it with a mixture of respect and extreme distaste! The amount of thorns I've had stuck in my hands, not to mention the one in my thumb that's been there for about 3 years! But...fascinating photo, auntnance, good spotting! :)
Aunt Nance, you would not believe that someone brought in a bag full of those corms today and wanted to know the name of the thorny vine associated with it. I knew it was what you had here and now I can call her and say Similax. This was extension work at the Library. Thanks for helping.
Thanks, I'm sorry I didn't see the reference at first. That is growing in my hedge and I've never known the name. Thanks.
Did you look at the reference? It's that nasty tough-stemmed thorny vine that you can't seem to get rid of unless you dig up the huge corms.
Could we have a little more explanation, I don't know what a similax is!
