Blue Wildebeest

I seem to recall that the area was the site of a huge volcano that imploded a few million years ago. I'm sure he did tell us a lot more info but the only notes I took were on the wildlife!

Yes, we spent a couple of days at Lake Manyara reserve, 3 days in Serengeti & a day in Ngorongoro. Before that we did a 5 day trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,344 ft) the highest mountain in Africa, which was an awesome experience!

I think it's about 100 miles from Serengeti but the road was terrible so the drive took about 4 hours. On of the really cool things about Ngorongoro is because it is a crater, the herds in there don't migrate so you get to see the wildebeest & zebra all year round. It's also a bit of an elephant graveyard as the old bull elephants go there once they are on the their last set of teeth (elephants have 6 sets that last about 10 years each) because the vegetation down there is very lush so it's easier for them to chew & digest. Once the last teeth wear out they basically starve so there are lots of elephant skulls around which was kind of eerie.

It's a really amazing place. There is just so much wildlife & it is really peaceful because they limit the number of visitors.
