Description:

The spined soldier bug is a species of insect common in North America. They are predators of gypsy moth caterpillars and the larvae of beetles such as the Colorado potato beetle and the Mexican bean beetle.

I think this may be a stinkbug (Pentatomidae) nypmh, or maybe a parent bug nymph (Acanthosomatidae). Probably the former rather than the latter. See photos starting at http://bugguide.net/node/view/182/bgimage and see what you think.
