Field Notes

Description:

Large spider. Yellow and black legs. Yellow abdomen with white spots and blotches.

Habitat:

Webs are built from a few feet above the ground to high in trees.

Notes:

Also called Banana spider. Golden refers to the structural strands of its web which are golden.
It belongs to the oldest known Genus of spiders. 165 million year old fossils have been found.
The largest species of spider in Florida.
She built her web outside the windows next to the chair where I read at night. Feasting on the abundance of insects drawn to my light she has grown rapidly and is the largest of her species in my yard.
