Field Notes

Description:

Dark back, legs look are greyish yellow, but that could be the poor light. I also spotted him with his breakfast - I think it's a crab, and he kept walking up and down that spit of land, bashing it on the ground with his beak.

Notes:

Photographed in the Rio Formosa National Park, on the salt flats.

Ah well there you go! I'd trust the observation of the person who was actually there over anything else ;) I love your bird pics!
I did take a photo of a lesser black-backed gull around the same place as this one, same day as well. The lighting was perfect, the beak and legs bright yellow. But then the clouds came over and my light went!! So it's a tough one, but I think Liam's right. :)
Tough one! The legs look greyish pink to me (though could be the photo), which means its a great black backed gull. Lessers have yellow legs... buuuut, again it might be the photo and the lighting, so if the legs were indeed yellow, then Liam is right! :D Nice little set of photos, I like it when you catch the animal doing something
Thanks, Liam. I wondered about that, but the colouring just didn't match. But that might have been the poor lighting.... I think you're right. :)
Lesser Black-Backed Gull seems like a good match.
