Field Notes

Description:

Of what appeared to be an artichoke plant discarded in the lake while the water was receding in late Summer now, this turns out to be a probable water lily or fresh-water aquatic plant. There were a couple of others laying on the shoreline. No root system or attachment of any type. Bright purple fibrous blooms which almost felt rubbery to the touch, attracting many bees.

Habitat:

Fresh water lake bank.

Sure they do, mine did too... I think because we didn't harvest quite quick enough. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artichoke#Cooking
It is an Artichoke. I took pictures of several while I was in Austria.

! I have never seen one in bloom but it certainly looks like an artichoke doesn't it?
