-6.10169, 106.735
Field Notes
Description:
A Crab-Eating macaque family (Male, female and cub).
Pale brown in colour with light golden brown tips, long tail, often longer than its body (typically 40–65 cm), body length about 50 cm relatively short arms and legs. Males are considerably larger than females, weighing 5–9 kg compared to the 3–6 kg of females. Eyelids with prominent white markings, Males have a characteristic mustache and cheek whiskers, while females have only cheek whiskers.
Habitat:
Spotted during a morning walt at Mangrove Anke park - Jakarta, a natural marine mangrove area at Jakarta city, the name crab-eating macaque refers to its being often seen foraging beaches for crabs and the mangrove area is particular rich in crabs, they are opportunistic omnivores and unfortunately the park offers many opportunities to feed on human trash.
This male was defending his family impeding me to advance on the path, at the time I took the pic with my mobile phone he jumped to the floor showing his teeth as a clear advise.
Notes:
The Mangrove Anke park in Jakarta is a natural mangrove area in Jakarta, a good area to observe marine and estuary birds like Herons, macaques, Water Monitor lizards, spiders, butterflies, etc. unfortunately it is not well maintained with trash from the city canals and from visitors, the cost for bringing a camera is prohibitive (1.500.000 Million Rupiah), about 100 Euro.
Very sad to observe also a cage containing Crab-eating macaques as a tourist attraction.
