Description:

Common plant in alley ways in the village, Perennial herb - 6 - 10ft tall. Commonly called Poke or Poke Sallet (local slang for salad) Early pioneers used berry juice for ink (then called Inkweed) - In the South young leaves are boiled twice and eaten. Old leaves and the rest of the plant are very poisonous.

Habitat:

Eastern and southern US. Open disturbed sites.

Notes:

Name refers to the (Greek) phyton "plant" then lacca "crimson lake".
