Description:
The siamang is a tailless, arboreal, black-furred gibbon native to the forests of Malaysia, Thailand, and Sumatra. The largest of the lesser apes, the Siamang can be twice the size of other gibbons, reaching 1 m in height, and weighing up to 14 kg. The Siamang is the only species in the genus Symphalangus.
This young siamang (F) was separated from her family since January 2011 and ended up at the Upper Gap Gate House of Fraser's Hill. Often turning up to feed on the wild fruits nearby, the locals have also been leaving different types of fruits for her.
She has been named Bobbi and became a tourist attraction but still remains wild.
Habitat:
The siamang inhabits the forest remnants of Sumatra Island and the Malay Peninsula and is widely distributed from lowland forest to montane forest — even a rainforest — and can be found at altitudes of up to 3800 m. The siamang lives in groups of up to 6 individuals (4 individuals on average) with an average home range of 23 hectares.
