Description:

Thyme has a herbal or lemon scent typical of them. In herbalism, it is used as an aphrodisiac and cough medicine. It is also used as a seasoning for many meat dishes and its dried leaves are used for a herbal tea. It is also important for Large Blue Butterfly, which feeds exclusively on wild thyme.

T. serpyllum is widely spread, not only on sandy soils, I found them even in alpine regions, and calciumrich soil Do not forget that it is important medical and spice plant.
Oh indeed, you are right! I would think it may be Thymus alpestris since I spotted it in Tatra Mountains, but it looks more like serpyllum....
