Arctic Red Jellyfish
Cyanea capillata
44.8823, -65.1639
Field Notes
Description:
The jellyfish in this photo looks somewhat flat, but it is not "beached". It was encountered floating in a tidepool, very much alive.
While there were very few red jellyfish in the water on the day that I spotted this one, they are so plentiful at times that it can be difficult to avoid them while swimming. Fortunately, their sting isn't very potent at all.
Chelton Beach Provincial Park has posted some great "jellyfish crossing" signs (see second picture) to alert beachgoers.
