Field Notes

Notes:

the common name bloodroot refers to the red sap which is most noticeable when the orange rhizomes are broken. Bloodroot produces toxic alkaloids. Native Americans used it as a medicinal and a red dye. Although it is used today in dental hygiene products there is evidence that it causes oral lesions.
