Description:

small black and blue butterfly [blue on 'shoulders' only. hairy back.

Habitat:

tropical/subtropical

Notes:

I only had chance for one shot, it flew away and i cudn't keep up to get the best open-winged shot!

trhanks bayuka, i had tried google and no luck and have found a butterfly field guide, guess i would have had to spend great time to figure his creature out as an no b-fly expert! much appreciated on this incite, this is the only photo i got as it pretty hasty at escaping the shot after this only attempt have not spotted another specimen! season greetings

It is not Egregius and not even Astraptes sp., as I also thought at first sight. But the grey head is not typical for this skipper. It is Narcosius sp., also a Hesperiidae/Skipper. Unfortunately it is not possible to get a closer ID with your shot and all Narcosius looks almost identical. Sorry! http://butterfliesofamerica.com/t/Narcosius_a.htm

sadly this is the only pic i got, now am wishing i had one with its wings wide open! but great enuf nimkar! had a nice Id-ing! will be on the lookout for another of this species!

yes..! In Astraptes genus egregius specie has black abdomen like your spotting and only one white strip on each wing.

to confirm the species is a challenge! the flickr image has a blue hairs! while my one has black. wonder if there are stages or different morphs or a variety of species or subspecies! the species you gave me seems to be a diff specimen! this is challenging! jeje
