Field Notes

Description:

Small (about 1cm) beetles on surface of water

Habitat:

Flood waters of the Missouri River in deciduous forest.

Notes:

The Missouri river is well outside of its banks and now flows through this forest. This picture was taken from a gravel road. The river flows over the road some twenty feet away, but where the road is too high it blocks the river and creates areas of standing water. These areas were covered with thousands of these beetles furiously swimming about the surface. I've counted 82 in this picture. Spotted along Camp Gifford Road.
