KarenL's fun fact is not accurate. It was originally assumed that the pitcher plants fed on insects and larger but it has been discovered that insects only get trapped by accident. The pitcher plants are actually toilets. Different species host different mammals and extract the nutrients from their feces. I learned this from a recent documentary where David Attenborough talked about his adventures and revealed this truth.
Fun fact! Carnivorous pitcher plants are among the largest meat eating plants in the world. Although most get their nutrients from capturing insects, some of the larger species can catch and digest larger prey, including rats, lizards and even small birds! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152668313060603&set=a.10152575329380603.958289.10150120463815603&type=1 https://twitter.com/projectnoah/status/314824549436907520
It´s a carnivore plant, right ? Insects fall inside and are dissolved.
