Description:

This is the male, which is apparently more rare to spot than the female. Pretty sure about the species.

Habitat:

temperate forest

Notes:

I was shocked when I first saw a few of these insects at Heartland Forest. It was my first and only time seeing them. Got the ID from here

Thanks Jopy. That's the genus I was thinking too. After some searching it appears this is the less commonly spotted male.
nice wasp, maybe genus Megarhyssa (atrata or macrurus)..
