Loggerhead Shrike
Lanius ludovicianus
28.2013, -80.5966
Field Notes
Description:
From Cornell: A small gray, black, and white bird of open areas, the Loggerhead Shrike hardly appears to be a predator. But it uses its hooked beak to kill insects, lizards, mice, and birds, and then impales them on thorns to hold them while it rips them apart.
Habitat:
Open areas throughout North America. Saw this guy across the street from the beach.
Notes:
Have been seeing this guy right above where I park every morning for the past week. Didn't know anything about shrikes before so was Sibley's field guide that led me to shrike from where I started...at Mockingbird. But I'm not 100% positive, so would appreciate confirmation or help from those more experienced.
