Field Notes

Description:

A dark brown medium sized moth with tented wings and dark tufted thorax. The fore wings had a few white specks that were quite distinctive. Pic 2 is fuzzy because the moth didn't settle but it clearly shows the pinkish red hind wing bases and abdomen.

Habitat:

Spotted under bright lights near a national park.

Notes:

This species of ghost moth is seen in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
The larvae of most ghost moths live underground where they tunnel into the soil and feed on plant roots.
Family: Hepialidae
