Field Notes

Description:

Blue "jay like" bird with a very social "personality."

Habitat:

Florida scrub habitat. Areas without housing near the bird's breeding area. Dwarf Live Oak are essential.

Notes:

There are many scrub jays in the Sun 'n Lake of Sebring Improvement District near Avon Park Florida. Birds will come to observers with unsalted raw peanuts. All birds in area respond to this stimulus. Humans just stand in the area with hands outstretched with peanut in hand. Jay will land on human and accept the peanut with out any aggression form the jay.,

From my brief reading it is illegal and is performed almost without regard or enforcement, it seems by many people.
I'm not an attorney, but I can say that The Nature Conservancy's representatives, that were visiting for business with the Special District that I worked for fed them various foods, peanuts included to get them nearer so they could take pictures. They would land on you regardless.
i thought it was illegal to feed them peanuts since they are endangered. is that true?
Scrub-Jays so would do that. Lol. Awesome shot!
