Field Notes

Description:

Hesperiidae; Hesperiinae; Taractrocera luzonensis luzonensis Staudinger 1889. The skipper butterfly shown here appears to be T. l. luzonensis, the Luzon Grass Dart. There is, however, something that concerns me about my identification. If you look on the hind wings which are fully opened and horizontal (the 3rd photo is probably the best for this purpose), you will see that there is one yellow spot, out near the margin and separate from all the other yellow markings. There is another, much smaller spot just below that one, in all the images of T. l. luzonensis that I have seen, but not on my specimen. Other than this discrepancy, my photos seem to match everything else about the ssp. luzonensis. I considered calling this spotting Taractrocera sp., but it would appear that all species and subspecies in the genus are documented. I have seen no mention of any Taractrocera spp. I am left wondering if I am entirely wrong with this one and it may not be a member of the Genus Taractrocera. Any help or advice would be welcome.

Habitat:

This Luzon Grass Dart was spotted in the rice field behind our house.
