Field Notes

Description:

Flittering at the front of my house. Family True Brush-foots, Nymphalinae. Wingspan: 3.6-5.1cm - 1.4 to 2.0 inch Tawny Orange and black bands with wide black borders. Hindwing with submarginal row of white-centered, squarish black spots. Below: Hindwing with pale yellow brown and dark marginal patch with incomplete row of silvery white crescents. Similar sex. Female larger.

Habitat:

Moist woodland edges - stream corridors - wet meadows.

Thanks P.Young713 - The flowers are the ubiquitous Buddleia - In our garden (front and back) we have several white and blue varieties and they are a focus for many butterflies.
