Field Notes

Description:

A large diving duck with a round head. Breeding male has a bright reddy-orange head, black breast and neck, coral red bill and white flanks. Non-breeding male is brown with a red bill. The female is brownish with pale cheeks and a grey bill.

Habitat:

Prefers to live on wetlands with plenty vegetation. They are a scarce resident in Britain with a growing population in the South.
