Field Notes

Description:

Small moth about 1 1/2 inches in length. Very colorful. Orange/black body with black and white patterned wings and feathery antenna.

Habitat:

Open sagebrush areas of the west. Not much is known about these moths.

Notes:

I contacted an entomologist to identify the photos. I had never seen such a moth. There were hundreds in 2006, but over the last five years, we have seen fewer. This may be due to their hatching at somewhat random times and springs have been very cold lately. I am documenting sightings and numbers to learn more about these moths.
